Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about the Foundation and our rescue pets:

Adoptions

What does the adoption fee cover?
The adoption fees cover enormous veterinary bills for all of the rescue animals that are cared for at the foster farm in Pincher Creek. Many of these animals require additional care beyond vaccinations, such as treatment for injuries, skin problems, sickness, and amputations.

Do I have to adopt one of your animals through a Petland store?
Yes. We have adoption areas in the Petland stores located in Calgary (except Market Mall) and Red Deer.

I have a dog at home and I would like to adopt a playmate for him/her. How do I ensure that my dog is compatible with another dog?
You need to bring your dog with you to one of the Petland stores and introduce him/her to the dog you are considering adopting. You must remember that animals do not bond overnight and it takes time. The animals may need to meet one another several times before it can be determined if they are compatible or not.

About Our Rescue Animals

What happens if animals are not adopted?
We are a no kill shelter. If we cannot find the right family for our animals at one of the Petland stores, and they are not in ill health or deemed aggressive, then they can live at the foster home.

Where do the animals come from?
The foundation rescues many animals from rural Alberta garbage dumps, because the dumps attract animals that are searching for food. We also rescue animals from shelters and pounds that would otherwise be scheduled for euthanasia. We do not take owner surrenders, as we must focus on the animals that are suffering from starvation, disease, injuries, and other issues.

How do you decide which animals to rescue?
Our animals are rescued on a “first come basis.” We have NO pre-requisites for assessing which animals are rescued and which are not (ie. which would be most adoptable). We rescue any and all animals that are in need regardless of their medical needs, psychological needs, color, breed or sex.

How are the animals prepared for adoption?
Before the animals are adopted, they must have an isolation period. They receive health checks, appropriate vaccinations, and are given rabies vaccinations (if they are over three months of age). They are also spayed/neutered if they are an appropriate age. Each animal comes with a complete file, which includes their health record (completed by our veterinarian), the story of how the animal came to be rescued, and any other information we feel is necessary to help match the appropriate pet with a new family. Keep in mind that is impossible for us to document all traits of the animal, as most of the rescue animals are only in foster care for short periods of time. The foster family can provide more detail regarding a special needs animal that must stay at the farm for a longer period of time.

Website

How often is the website updated?
The website is maintained by volunteers, and we periodically update and change the site. We cannot maintain a list of animals for adoption for viewing; however, we will maintain a list of our exceptional cases because they may not be suitable for Petland adoption centres.
